This small city is the most remote and unusual of the suburbs of St. Petersburg. Located on Kotlin Island in the Gulf of Finland, it has served as the sea shield of Saint Petersburg throughout its history.

The tour introduces the fortress city of Kronstadt, with its history full of exploits and cruel tragedies associated with the Russian Navy, revolutionary and military events. The historical center of Kronstadt is included in the UNESCO world heritage list. Kronstadt was awarded the title "The city of wartime glory".

Now we have a unique opportunity to visit Kronstadt, but in Soviet times it was a closed city and you could only get to it by a special pass through the border zone.

The guide will show you the Kronstadt fortress, you will see the City Dam connecting Kotlin island with the mainland, the Harbor of the port with the navy ships, piers, Peter's docks, the bypass channel, guns from the time of Catherine II, the Italian Palace, and defensive forts. We shall definitely come to the Blue Bridge, where the “Kronstadt footshtock” is located. It is the tide gauge, from the zero point of which from 1840 to the present time in Russia, as well as throughout the former USSR, the level of the Baltic sea is measured. The “footshtock” in Kronstadt is one of the oldest in the world.

During the tour, you will also learn about more than 40 round-the-world expeditions that were sent from Kronstadt. For example, the first Russian circumnavigation of Kruzenshtern.

One of the main stops in our tour will be Anchor Square, where we shall see the Grand Naval Cathedral of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker – the largest of the sea cathedrals of the Russian Empire! The main Shrine of the Russian Navy, the Naval Cathedral, rises above the island and the sea and, after the restoration, once again bears its unique purpose – to serve as a Cathedral of Russian naval glory, to collect naval relics, and to keep the memory of hero-sailors. The memorial plates inside the Cathedral are commemorated with about a thousand names of naval officers who died in naval battles from 1695 to 1918. After the tour and a walk around, you will have some time (about 20 minutes) to go to the Cathedral and see its amazing interior decoration.

We will visit the Grand Duke Constantine Fort. This is the largest artillery structure in Kronstadt. During the tour, you will learn how the sea fortress was built, how sailors and soldiers served. A Museum of the lighthouse service was created on the territory of the Fort. We will definitely see it. The Museum's collection includes giant old lenses made of French crystal, acetylene and electric lights for navigation signs and lighthouses, and lanterns that illuminated the Road of life. Exhibits for the Museum were collected all over the country-from Moscow to the Far East. Most of the devices have already been restored and are in working order. You will see a lens for the sash beacon. All ships leaving the port of St. Petersburg have been heading for the light of this lens for 98 years!
